A psychiatric evaluation involves obtaining a thorough account of someone’s current and past psychiatric history including diagnoses and various treatments as well as medical, employment, education, social, and family histories.
A comprehensive evaluation may not be necessary for every consultation but is almost always recommended in order to provide the most accurate guidance.

Determining treatment complexity isn’t always easy. Less complex cases tend to involve a small and consistent number of psychiatric diagnoses, history of psychiatric outpatient care (no inpatient or partial hospitalizations), and/or a lower number medication trials or other psychiatric interventions.
More complex cases may involve a larger number or inconsistent diagnoses over time, outpatient and inpatient psychiatric care, serious co-occurring medical conditions, and/or a multitude of past treatments (3+ medication trials and interventional psychiatry like TMS, ketamine, or ECT).
