Dr. Joseph R. Houchins, DNP, PMHNP, MSN, MA
Dr. Houchins is a doctorally trained psychiatric nurse practitioner, born, raised, and now working in Austin, Texas. He obtained his NP doctorate and master’s in nursing degrees from Columbia University, and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in psychology from Boston University and Trinity University (TX), respectively.
Dr. Houchins completed his didactic training through Columbia-affiliated New York Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI). There, he gained exposure to ketamine treating, ECT, pharmacotherapy, and psychotherapy, treating individuals with a broad range of psychiatric conditions including trauma, bipolar, psychotic, and personality disorders as well as treatment-resistant depression and anxiety.
Following his training, Dr. Houchins worked as an NP and director of clinical services for an NYC-based, private outpatient psychiatric clinic specializing in treatment resistant psychiatric conditions. He gained extensive experience treating the full spectrum of psychiatric conditions while administering TMS, ketamine (instranasal and IV), individual and group psychotherapy, as well as medication management.
Dr. Houchins was a teaching fellow and adjunct instructor at Boston University and has published 7 research articles through his time at Boston University, the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and the Bedford (MA) VA Hospital.
